How Often Should You Wash Your Sheets? (gross!)

You slip between the sheets every day — they’re your home for a good night of sleep. But considering how much contact our bodies make with our sheets, we let them go in between washes for a surprisingly long time. The average person changes their sheets every 24 days, according to a survey of 1,000 Americans by Mattress Advisor. Respondents said that they could technically go longer, saying it would get gross at about 35 days.

Spoiler alert: That’s much longer than experts recommend. Here’s how often you should actually wash your sheets, and how not washing them enough may affect your health.

Your sheets are comfy and cozy, but they harbor a dirty secret: They’re reservoirs for dead skin cells, dust mites (gross!), and bacteria. Couple that with the amount of time you spend in bed, and there’s a lot of potential exposure to things that may make you feel unwell, says Kelly Reynolds, PhD, professor at the University of Arizona Zuckerman College of Public Health in Tucson. In addition, products that we tend to smooth on our body, such as lotions, creams, and oils, also attract dust particles “and germs are really attracted to dust particles,” she explains.

Cancer is often regarded as a disease of the modern age. However, medical texts from ancient Egypt indicate that healers of the time were aware of the condition. Now, new evidence from a skull more than 4,000 years old has revealed that ancient Egyptian physicians may have tried to treat certain cancers with surgery.

The skull belonged to a man who was about 30 to 35 years old when he died, and it resides in the Duckworth Laboratory collection at the University of Cambridge in the United Kingdom. Since the mid-19th century, scientists have studied the skull’s scarred surface, including multiple lesions thought to represent bone damage from malignant tumors. Archaeologists regard the skull, labeled 236 in the collection, as one of the oldest examples of malignancy in the ancient world, dating back to between 2686 BC and 2345 BC.

But when researchers recently peered more closely at the tumor scars with a digital microscope and micro-computed tomography (CT) scans, they detected signs of cut marks around the tumors, suggesting that sharp metal instruments had been used to remove the growths. The scientists reported the findings Wednesday in the journal Frontiers in Medicine.

Common low-calorie sweetener linked to heart attack and stroke, study finds

A low-calorie sweetener called xylitol used in many reduced-sugar foods and consumer products such as gum and toothpaste may be linked to nearly twice the risk of heart attacks, stroke, and death in people who consume the highest levels of the sweetener, a new study found.

“We gave healthy volunteers a typical drink with xylitol to see how high the levels would get and they went up 1,000-fold,” said senior study author Dr. Stanley Hazen, director of the Center for Cardiovascular Diagnostics and Prevention at the Cleveland Clinic Lerner Research Institute.

“When you eat sugar, your glucose level may go up 10% or 20% but it doesn’t go up a 1,000-fold,” said Hazen, who also directs the Cleveland Clinic’s Center for Microbiome and Human Health.
