Could sharing a bedroom with your pets be keeping you from getting a good night’s sleep?

Sleeping with your dog in the same room could be negatively affecting your sleep quality, according to my team’s recently published research in Scientific Reports.

We recruited a nationally representative sample of more than 1,500 American adults who completed questionnaires assessing their sleep habits. Overall, about half of the participants reported co-sleeping with pets – defined in our study as sleeping in the same room with your pet for at least part of the night.

Next, our research team compared the sleep habits of people who did and didn’t co-sleep with pets. Our analyses revealed that participants who co-slept with pets had poorer sleep quality and more insomnia symptoms than those who did not. These findings persisted even after accounting for demographic differences between these groups. When considering pet type, we found evidence for a negative effect on sleep when co-sleeping with dogs but no evidence for a negative effect on sleep when co-sleeping with cats.

Can Apple Cider Vinegar Really Help You Lose Weight?

A daily spoonful of apple cider vinegar was associated with weight loss of 13 to 16 pounds over three months in young people who were overweight or had obesity, according to new research published in BMJ Nutrition, Prevention, and Health.

Drinking between 1 teaspoon (tsp) and 1 tablespoon (tbsp) of apple cider vinegar dissolved in water was also linked with significant decreases in blood sugar levels, triglycerides, and cholesterol.

The findings suggest that apple cider vinegar could be “a promising anti-obesity supplement that does not produce any side effect,” the researchers wrote.

The changes in weight, body mass index (BMI), waist and hip circumference, and appetite from drinking apple cider vinegar are certainly intriguing, says Christine Tenekjian, MPH, RDN, who works at the Duke Lifestyle and Weight Management Center in Durham, North Carolina, and was not involved in the research. “These findings suggest that we need to certainly consider apple cider vinegar as a possible intervention for weight loss and keep studying it,” she says.

Paulsen Bronston tried different medications to manage his diabetes, to no avail, before his doctor suggested a new drug.

In 2018, the doctor advised Bronston, who lives in the Navajo Nation, to take Ozempic to lower his blood sugar. The benefits outweighed any risk of side effects, his physician said.

Bronston, of Kayenta, Arizona, a small town east of the Grand Canyon, continued to take Ozempic for several months even though he experienced severe diarrhea and discomfort. One day, the pain was unbearable.

"I started hurting really bad. I got yellow eyes and stuff like that," Bronston said. "Next thing you know, I was in the hospital, having my gallbladder removed."

More than five dozen lawsuits accuse Novo Nordisk or Eli Lilly of failing to notify patients about the side effects of their popular diabetes or weight loss drugs. Those drugs include Novo Nordisk's Ozempic, Wegovy and Rybelsus, and Eli Lilly's Trulicity and Mounjaro. These personal injury cases have been centralized under a federal judge in Philadelphia because they share common elements involving the same class of drugs.
